Creating Value Through Collaborative Vendor Engagement

Creating Value Through Collaborative Vendor Engagement

Advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) through collaborative vendor engagement refers to a strategic approach where organizations work closely with their vendors or suppliers to promote and achieve greater diversity, equity, and inclusion within their supply chains and business operations. It recognizes that organizations have significant influence and leverage over their vendors and can use this relationship to drive positive change and foster a more inclusive and equitable business environment.

The Third Place and The Portland Regional Chamber Collective Business Racial Equity Initiative invite members of The Third Place to join us for an exciting conversation and tasting event featuring Ben Conniff, Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer at Luke’s Lobster, Benjamin “Moody” Harney, Founder of Mother Shuckers – the only oyster cart in Brooklyn as featured on the Netflix series High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America, and Jackie Summers, Founder of Sorel Liquer – the first Blackowned licensed distillery in the United States post-Prohibition.

We will discover how these three brands have become connected through a more equitable form of vendor engagement and how each founder is creating new pathways for underrepresented communities through their company operations and charitable efforts.

4th Annual Juneteenth Celebration: A Day of Rest, Reflection, and Community Connection

The Third Place is back in Portland this year for the 4th Annual Juneteenth Celebration.  Each year, we celebrate Juneteenth as a day off from the daily labor of educating, advocating, and showing up for others and invest that energy into creating #BlackJoy for each other. More than any other day, we are called to retrieve the rest that was deprived of our ancestors and trailblazers to spend time in community.  This day of rest, reflection, and community is a day to vision our own version of the way life should be in Maine.

We're going to kick up our level of community chill this year with an island takeover at Fortland located on House Island in Portland's beautiful Casco Bay. We will provide traditional foods, live music, games, dancing, arts and crafts, yogo, ecological tours and more.

There will be opportunities for structured and unstructured activities throughout the day into the evening.  We invite those who will just be joining for the day to bring a tent, swim suit, fishing rod, blankets, a kite or anything you need to create your own private refuge on the island while you are there. Come to participate or disappear to your own corner of the island with a book or journal. The island is ALL ours.

We will conclude with dancing, music, and marshmallows by the fire pit. More details to come. . Due to the logistics of boat transportation and Fortland’s capacity, participation on Juneteenth is limited to 75 attendees.  This opportunity is designed specifically for individuals from the BIPOC community and their families with priority given to those who are descendants of those enslaved in the Americas and surrounding territories. Children are welcome.

Registration is required: Click here to register for Juneteenth.

A limited number of community organizers are invited to spend an overnight in island accommodations from the afternoon of June 18th to the evening of June 19th. If you are a Third Place organizer, board member or advisor, a member of the BIPOC community employed with a BIPOC-led organization, or a participant in any of the SHIFTMaine sector networks, you are welcome to request an overnight stay.  REQUEST AN OVERNIGHT STAY HERE: https://forms.gle/zWwaMPrqAr4NX8oA7

Overnight requests must be received by June 3rd.  You will be notified on or before June 10th if you receive a spot.

If you would like to volunteer, gift resources, skills, talents or expertise to the community for the day,  we would love to hear from you. SIGN UP HERE: https://forms.gle/tTXvoUrurfR7CcgS6

If you or your business are interested in sponsoring the Juneteenth Island Takeover, contact info@thethirdplace.me or make a donation through the Eventbrite ticketing registration.

We look forward to celebrating and connecting with you.

BIPOC Business After Hours with Ebenezer Akakpo, Designer - Akakpo & Co.

Join us for another BIPOC Business After Hours

The professional journey for Ebenezer Akakpo, designer and owner of Akakpo & Co., has led him on a creative path that he could not have predicted.  His journey has led him from the pursuit of a career in architecture to jewelry design- two very different paths with mutual applicability.  With his growing brand recognition, he is keen to ensure that the foundation of his design evolution remains central to the narrative of each piece he creates.

We look forward to you welcoming you to Akakpo & Co. as we learn how Ebenezer has used his transferable skills to build a brand that embraces the beauty and cultural identity of symbols from his native Ghana.

The evening will open with networking and the gentle sounds of Hadith Bani-Adam on the Somali Oud followed by a brief conversation between Adilah Muhammad and Ebenezer Akakpo. Stick around for more networking and to peruse the shop for something for yourself or someone special.

The first 25 attendees will receive a gift certificate of $20 towards the purchase of any item in the shop (For registered attendees only).

An assortment of appetizers and complimentary beer and wine will be served.

SHIFT - BIPOC Banking and Finance Network

The Maine BIPOC Banking and Finance Network will be meeting ONLINE on Wednesday, July 13, 2022. This network is designed for individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color and are currently employed or have significant experience working in banking, finance, or a related field. Those who are interested in a career in banking and/or finance are also welcome to participate.

You are encouraged to join this network if you are interested in meeting BIPOC peers in the field, networking with Maine’s leaders in banking, marketing your banking/financial services to others in the BIPOC community, mentoring new professionals, improving representation, or addressing barriers to racial equity in the sector.

Historically, financial inclusion has been a significant barrier to economic prosperity in BIPOC communities. As individuals employed in the sector, there is a tremendous amount of value and insight BIPOC professionals can provide in helping to remove these barriers and shift the policies and practices that contribute to adverse outcomes for our communities.

The Maine BIPOC Banking and Finance Network is a sector network in the SHIFT Program at The Third Place Inc.

ABOUT SHIFT

Recruiting and retaining BIPOC employees is a challenge for Maine employers. Where there has been some success in recruitment, many organizations fail to retain BIPOC individuals due to a lack of cultural infrastructure throughout the state to support communities of color in and beyond the workplace. The SHIFT program seeks to improve recruitment and reduce employee attrition by providing sector or field-specific networks to connect BIPOC workers to a community of peers in their local community and across the state. SHIFT connects employees in economic sectors by creating opportunities to (a) network with peers and industry leaders, (b) build visibility of BIPOC employees in the field, (c) mentor new BIPOC employees, and (d) address workplace and sector challenges to racial equity.

DEI in the Outdoors - Maine Black Professionals Network in Conversation with L.L.Bean

Come for the conversation. Stay for the food and fun. Leave with some L.L.Bean swag.

There is perhaps no outdoor brand that embodies Maine's lifestyle more than L.L.Bean. With its vast national and international reach, its influence has the power to shape not only the imagery of the way life should be in Maine but also who is prioritized in outdoor experiences everywhere.

Leaders from L.L.Bean will kickoff our May meetup with a short overview of the company’s commitment to equal outdoor access.

"At L.L.Bean, we believe being outside brings out the best in us, no matter where we come from. That same concept applies inside the company, where we value individuality and encourage our colleagues to be themselves. We recognize, however, that the outdoor industry and outdoor recreation has not traditionally been accessible or readily available to everyone, especially people of color. As such, we’ve committed to using our voice, platform, and resources to help amplify broader perspectives about the importance of time outside as well as equal outdoor access. In 2021, we donated $6.2 million to help as many people as possible access and experience the restorative power of the outdoors."
